Wax or paint helps curtain rings slide more easily.
Curtain rings that stick and balk make opening and closing your curtain a trial. Tugging and yanking on the curtain can damage your window coverings or break the curtain rings. Defeat those balky curtain rings by smoothing the surface of the rod and providing a slick pathway for them to glide across. Use the right size rings for your curtain rods. Rings that are too small will never slide easily across the rod. Increase the size of the rings, or use a rod with a narrower diameter.

Wax
Step 1
Remove the curtains from the rod. Remove the rod from the window, if possible, to make it easier to work on.
Step 2
Rub the stub of a candle over the top of your curtain rod. This deposits a fine layer of candle wax along the top of the rod.
Step 3
Slip the curtain rings over the rod once more and remount the rod over the window. The rings should glide over the candle wax.
Paint
Step 1
Remove the curtains from the rod, and take the rod down from over the window. Sand the rod lightly with fine-grain sandpaper.
Step 2
Wipe the sandpaper residue from the rod. Paint the rod with two coats of high-gloss enamel paint. Let it dry.
Step 3
Remount the curtain rod over the window. The enamel paint provides a slick surface for your curtain rings to glide across.
Tip
Reapply the wax to the rod as necessary.
